A theoretical and practical course covering aspects of physical and organic chemistry. This course is required for the chemistry major.

This paper is taught through a combination of lectures, laboratory sessions and tutorials or zoom tutorials. Chemistry is an inherently practical subject and there is a focus on students gaining the necessary laboratory skills to succeed in their chosen Science major or Engineering specified program.

Students will learn basic concepts of physical and organic chemistry in the lectures (3 lectures per week).

At the beginning of the trimester, students will select their laboratory stream and unless there are exceptional circumstances, students must attend the same lab stream throughout the trimester. Labs start in the first week of trimester (week starting 10 July).

Two weekly tutorial sessions are available to students to support lab report writing and work on practice problems.

Students who successfully complete the course should be able to:

  • Describe basic thermodynamic concepts based on energy and entropy and use the laws of thermodynamics to make predictions of direction and extent of reactions
